It’s not uncommon for leading FMCG businesses to invest 15% to 20% of their invoiced sales in their retailer partner agreements. That’s a pretty huge commitment for any business – big or small. A fair chunk of this will inevitably take the form of promotional investment, helping to drive brand performance through disruption in-store. The next largest proportion of investment will be related to getting the brand basics right at fixture. These terms will typically be linked to agreed levels of distribution, location, space, facings capacities, and so on.

A good business will negotiate hard at the outset to maximise their space, knowing that there will be a direct relationship between in-store visibility and sales. What separates the good businesses from the great ones, however, are those that seek to ensure adherence to the plans and ensure that their conditionalised terms are met.

The difficulty with this is proving empirically where conditionalised terms have NOT been met. A small store sample and a few photos can be easily batted away by the skilled buyer, and let’s face it many suppliers often don’t even get to that stage as challenging a big retailer can be a scary prospect!

I know from bitter personal experience in a previous role how disarming it is to sit in front of a buyer at Cheshunt to talk about a thorny issue only for them to produce a better set of data and insight than you have in your briefcase.

So how can the main grocery retailers and discount retailers persuade nervous customers of their value-brand merits? Perhaps they should look at how the more successful grocery retailers encourage trial of new and own-brand products. Well-executed and well-integrated retailer sampling programmes are a simple, cost- effective and of course qualitative way to engage customers.

The product that’s been by-passed on the shelf time and time again is much more likely to be sampled when offered by a carefully-selected brand ambassador who can talk to consumers about the product, their own experience of using it and, importantly for the likes of Aldi and friends, gently reassure them on the quality of lesser known brands.

At Cosine we’ve been instrumental in raising awareness of Sainsbury’s own-brand ranges; bringing to the fore the quality messages and great taste of its products. We’ve used sampling to keep customers engaged and stimulated, whether their preferred price is the Taste the Difference or Basics range.

Sampling is seen as a welcome interruption to the routine and drag of a weekly shopping trip, a chance to try something not usually on the to-buy list and perhaps broaden the menu at home. In our sampling for Sainsbury’s, for example, 70% of our targeted consumers say that, post-sampling, they have a more positive view of the brand.

Yet it’s not plain sailing for any supermarket right now. Marketing Week reported this month that, post Horsegate, nearly 40% of shoppers are less trustful of their main supermarket*. And of course, we are still mired deep in recession which is having a significant effect on shopping habits. Consumers are open to alternatives they may have dismissed out of hand only a year ago. If only they can find a way of spreading the word, by persuading consumers they can offer competitive pricing, desirable product ranges and quality.

The discount food retailers are still minnows compared to the big four supermarket hunters, but the longer the recession lasts, the more confident they will become. Sampling will open their razor-sharp mouths for a bigger bite of the food retail market, if they’re hungry enough to take it.

Sainsbury’s sales saw the highest growth of the big grocers achieving double digit sales increase up 10.5% overshadowing Asda’s 6.5% and Tesco, who fell just below the market average growth rate, with 5.6%.

Much of this boost in sales can be put down to the vast increase in marketing spend around the seasonal period with promotional participation up by 34%. It can also be attributed to Easter falling a week later than in 2012 which meant that this year March benefited from the full hit of extra sales.
